Coal stocks at Indian power plants fall to 21.91 mt levels

September 11: After rising continuously for the last three-four months, coal stocks at Indian power utilities fell marginally to around 22 million tons (mt) during the week ended September 8 from a high of 23 mt witnessed in the previous week, according to data available from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The coal stocks position at the 99 Indian power plants monitored by the CEA stood at 21.91 mt as on September 8, 2013 while the same stood at 23.11 mt on August 29, 2013.
Out of the total inventory on September 8, imported coal stood at 0.973 mt while domestic coal was at 20.938 mt. The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.154 mt and 21.956 mt, respectively on August 29.
Total coal stocks with power plants stood at 22.998 mt on August 15 and at 22.05 mt on August 1, 2013.
Consequent to reduced coal supplies, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days rose to 13 on September 8, slightly up from 6 plants facing the same situation as on August 20 while 7 plants were facing the situation both on August 15 and August 1.
However, the number of plants facing super-critical coal stocks of less than four days stood at 4 as on August 25, up from 10 plants facing super-critical coal stock position as on August 29. The number of super critical plants also stood at 7 on September 8 and 4 on August 29, respectively, as per CEA data.
