Coal stocks at power plants cross 27.50-mt levels

April 13: From a low of about 7.2 million tons (mt) in the middle of October, stocks of coal at power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) rose to more than 27.5 million tons (mt) as on April 8, 2015, largely on account of higher domestic production and comparatively lower demand for electricity in the country.

Coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 27.508 million tons (mt) on April 8, 2015, up from 27.133 mt on April 7, 2015. On the other hand, coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 26.104 mt on March 31, 2015 and 22.066 mt on March 8, 2015.

So, in a span of one day, one week and one month, there has been an increase of 0.375 mt, 1.404 mt and 5.442 mt respectively in coal stocks at power plants.

Stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 3.124 mt and 24.384 mt respectively on April 8, 2015 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 2.934 mt and 24.199 mt on April 7, 2015.

Imported and domestic stocks stood at 2.682 mt and 23.422 mt respectively on March 31, 2015 and at 2.742 mt and 19.324 mt respectively on March 8, 2015.

In terms of days, stocks of coal on April 8 and April 27, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 18 days while on March 8 and March 31, 2015 the stocks were sufficient to run the plants for 18 and 15 days respectively.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 11 on both April 8 and April 7, 2015, while the figure was at 12 and 14 respectively on March 8 and 31, 2015.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days stood at 5 on both April 8 and April 7, 2015, while the figure was at 6 and 2 respectively on March 8 and 31, 2015.
