Coal stocks at power plants fall 2.43% w-o-w

September 29: Coal stocks at 104 thermal power plants (TPS) in India fell by almost 2.43% as on September 23 compared to that recorded in the previous week, on September 15, 2014, mainly due to lower supplies from Coal India Ltd (CIL), according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at the 104 TPS stood at 8.86 million tons (mt) on September 23, down from 9.081 mt recorded a week ago on September 15, data showed.

On September 7, coal stocks at 100 power plants stood at 8.61 mt while the same stood at 8.99 mt on August 31.

However, in terms of days, coal stocks stood at 6 days on September 23, September 15, September 7 as well as on August 31, data revealed.

The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 0.856 mt and 8.010 mt respectively on September 23 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 0.834 mt and 8.247 mt respectively on September 15.

On the other hand, stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 0.751 mt and 7.861 mt respectively on September 7 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 0.880 mt and 8.110 mt respectively on August 31.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood much higher at 57 on September 23 as compared to 53 plants facing a similar fate on September 15. Both on September 7 and August 31, this stood at 57, as per data made available by CEA.

The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days also stood higher at 35 on September 23 while on September 15, a total of 31 plants faced a similar situation. The number of plants facing super critical stocks stood at 29 both on September 7 and August 31, respectively.
