Coal stocks at power plants fall 23%

July 28: Coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) in India fell by more than 23% as on July 24 as compared to June 23, 2014 mainly due to lower supplies from Coal India Ltd (CIL), according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 10.06 million tons (mt) on July 24, down from 13.07 mt recorded a month ago on June 23, the data showed.
In fact, in terms of days, coal stocks stood lower at 7 days on June 23 as compared to 9 days as on June 23, data revealed.
The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.010 mt and 9.053 mt respectively on July 24 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.099 mt and 11.971 mt respectively on June 23.
The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.
The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood much higher at 46 on July 24 as compared to 43 plants facing a similar fate on June 23.
The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days also stood higher at 25 on July 24 while on June 23, a total of 23 plants faced a similar situation.
