Coal stocks at power plants fall in June

June 30: Coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) in India fell in June 2014 compared to that in the previous month, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 13.07 million tons (mt) on June 23, down from 15.652 mt recorded a month ago on May 27, the data showed.
In fact, in terms of days, coal stocks stood lower at 9 days on June 23 as compared to 12 days as on May 27, data revealed.
The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.099 mt and 11.971 mt on June 23 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.092 mt and 14.560 mt on May 27, respectively.
The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed. The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood much higher at 43 on June 23 as compared to 32 plants facing a similar fate on May 27.
The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days also stood higher at 23 on June 23 while on May 27, a total of 19 plants faced a similar situation.
