Coal stocks at power plants increase 6.21% w-o-w

December 19: With the increase in domestic coal production and improvement in despatches, coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) across India rose by almost 6.21% as on December 17 compared to that recorded on December 11, 2014, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at 100 power plants in the country stood at 12.602 million tons (mt), up from 11.865 mt recorded on December 11 which was also higher from 9.593 mt recorded on November 16, 2014 whereas on December 1, coal stocks at the power plants stood even lower at 10.807 mt, data showed.

However, in terms of days, there were coal stocks for 8 days both on December 17 and December 11, whereas on December 1, the same was at 7 days reserves, data revealed.

Stocks of imported and domestic coal were at 1.606 mt and 10.997 mt, respectively on December 17 whereas the stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.509 mt and 10.356 mt, respectively on December 11. These stocks stood at 1.209 mt and 9.598 mt, respectively on December 1.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 44 on December 17, at 45 on December 11 as compared to 49 plants facing a similar fate on December 1, as per data made available by CEA.

The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days stood at 24 on December 17, at 28 on December 11 while 27 plants faced a similar situation on December 1.
