Coal stocks at power plants increase by 9.72%

November 28: With the increase in domestic coal production and improvement in despatches, coal stocks at 103 thermal power plants (TPS) across India rose by almost 9.72% as on November 26 compared to that recorded on November 16, 2014, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at the 103 TPS stood at 10.525 million tons (mt) on November 26, up from 9.593 mt recorded on November 16, 2014 whereas on November 2, coal stock at the power plants stood even lower at 8.375 mt, data showed.

However, compared to 7.683 mt of coal stocks recorded a month ago on October 28 at 103 power plants, on November 26 these were found to have increased sharply by 36.99%.

However, in terms of days, there were coal stocks worth for 7 days on November 26, at 6 on November 16, at 5 on November 2 as well as on October 28, data revealed.

Stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 1.227 mt and 9.298 mt, respectively on November 26 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.103 mt and 8.490 mt respectively on November 16.

On the other hand, stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 0.836 mt and 7.539 mt, respectively on November 2 whereas the stocks were at 0.842 mt and 6.841 mt, respectively as on October 28.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 52 on November 26 as compared to 53 plants facing a similar fate on November 16. On November 2, this stood at 61 whereas on October 28, it was at 62, as per data made available by CEA.

The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days stood at 34 both on November 26 and November 16, while 35 plants faced a similar situation on November 2 whereas 36 plants faced critical coal stocks situation on October 28.
