Coal stocks at power plants slightly up in January

January 30: Coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) in India rose slightly in January 2013 compared to that in the previous month, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at 100 TPS stood at 17.983 million tons (mt) on January 28, up from 16.312 mt recorded a month ago on December 29, the data showed.

In terms of days, coal stocks were marginally up to 13 days as on January 30, against 12 days as on December 29.

Incidentally, the stocks of coal at the 100 power plants monitored by the CEA stood at 16.769 tons on January 15 which moved up on January 28.

The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.467 mt and 16.516 mt on January 28 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.32 mt and 14.992 mt on December 29.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the data of CEA revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 29 on January 28 compared to 26 plants facing a similar fate on January 15, while the number also stood at 29 on December 29.

However, the number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days stood at 12 as on January 28, at 15 on January 15, while 17 plants faced a similar situation on December 29.
