Coal stocks at power plants touch 13.810 mt

January 2: With the increase in domestic coal production and improvement in despatches, coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) across India rose by almost 0.09% as on December 30 compared to that recorded on December 28, 2014, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 13.810 million tons (mt) on December 30, up from 13.797 mt recorded on December 28, 2014 whereas on November 30, coal stocks at the power plants stood even lower at 10.845 mt, data showed.

However, in terms of days, there were coal stocks for 9 days on December 30 and on December 28, and for 7 days on November 30, data revealed.

Stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 1.742 mt and 12.069 mt, respectively on December 30 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.840 mt and 11.957 mt respectively on December 28.

On the other hand, stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 1.350 mt and 9.495 mt, respectively November 30.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the CEA data revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 41 on December 30 as compared to 40 plants facing a similar fate on December 28. On November 30, this stood at 50, as per data made available by CEA.

The number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days stood at 19 on December 30 and at 18 on December 28 whereas it stood at 30 on November 30.
