Coal stocks at power plants up in February

March 3: Coal stocks at 100 thermal power plants (TPS) in India rose slightly in February 2013 compared to that in the previous month, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Coal stocks at the 100 TPS stood at 19.06 million tons (mt) on February 27, up from 17.983 mt recorded a month ago on January 28, the data showed.

However, in terms of days, coal stocks were marginally down to 12 days as on February 27, against 13 days as on January 28.

Incidentally, the stocks of coal at the 100 power plants monitored by the CEA stood at 18.67 tons on February 16 which moved up on February 27.

The stocks of imported and domestic coal stood at 1.424 mt and 17.636 mt on February 27 while imported and domestic coal stocks stood at 1.467 mt and 16.516 mt on January 28 respectively.

The change in the overall coal stocks situation also affected the number of plants facing a critical coal stocks situation of less than four days, the data of CEA revealed.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at 25 on February 27 compared to 25 plants facing a similar fate on February 16, while the number also stood at 29 on January 28.

However, the number of plants facing a super-critical coal stocks scenario of less than four days stood at 13 on February 27 as well as on February 16, while 12 plants faced a similar situation on January 28.
