Coal stocks at power units continue to increase

Coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) continued to grow beyond 30 million tons (mt) as on December 29, 2015. Moreover, coal stock levels increased as on that date compared on a week-on-week and month-on-month basis. Also, the number of plants in critical as well as super-critical stock positions were at zero as on December 29 and December 22, 2015.

According to the CEA report, coal stocks at 100 thermal pwer stations (TPS) as on December 29, 2015 stood at 30.969 million tons (mt), up 3.10% from 30.039 mt as on December 22, 2015 as well as up 14.79% from 26.979 mt as on November 30, 2015.

The coal stocks at the TPS stood at 13.971 mt on December 31, 2014.

Domestic coal stocks at the TPS as on December 29, 2015 stood at 28.824 mt, up 4.07% from 27.696 mt as on December 22, 2015 as well as up 13.36% from 25.426 mt as on November 30, 2015.

Imported coal stocks at the TPS as on December 29, 2015 stood at 2.146 mt, up by 38.18% from 1.553 mt as on November 30, 2015.

Stocks of imported and domestic coals stood at 1.905 mt and 12.066 mt respectively on December 31, 2014.

The number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at nil on December 29, 2015 while the figure was at nil on December 22, 2015 and 1 on November 30, 2015. The said figure was 42 on December 31, 2014.

Similarly, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than four days stood at 0 for  December 29, 2015, December 22, 2015 and November 30, 2015. The said figure was 19 on December 31, 2014.

In terms of days, stocks of coal on December 29, 2015, December 22, 2015 and on November 30, 2015 were sufficient to run all the plants for 24, 23 and 21 days respectively while on December 31, 2014 the stocks were sufficient to run the plants for 9 days.
