Coal unions adopt ‘wait-and-watch’ approach

May 23: Amidst reports that the new NDA government at the Centre may opt for a break-up of Coal India Ltd (CIL) into separate companies, the trade unions are adopting a “watch-and-wait” policy.
“It is to be seen how the new government approaches the restructuring issue. We have started talks among ourselves regarding the likely steps and implications,” a senior leader of the CITU-backed union told ICMW.
While expressing concerns at the possibility of opening up the coal sector, he said, “We have to chart out ways on how to engage into a dialogue to protect the workers’ interests. However, as of now, we cannot but adopt a wait-and-watch approach.”
