Cochin ICTT aimed at global opportunities: Govt
07 Mar 2016
The Cochin Port has developed the international container trans-shipment terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam in order to tap more international opportunities, Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Shipping, said in the Lok Sabha. This was undertaken to attract international trans-shipments, especially from Europe, South East Asia, Australlia and the Gulf, which can trigger maritime-related business opportunities, the minister said.
This is a public-private-partnership (PPP) venture with Dubai Port World (DP World) as the private partner.
In order to make the terminal a successful project, the government has created supportive infrastructure.
For instance, a 17.2 km, 4-lane road for container trucks has been built to reach the terminal from NH 47 and NH 17 cutting out the need to get onto city roads. An 8.6-km long railway link has been developed to connect the terminal to the national grid and an LNG port and terminal have also been developed at Puthuvypeen.
The government has also supported capital dredging of the terminal to create 14.5-metre draft.
