April 3: A lacklustre trend prevailed in international coal markets on April 2 even as coking coal prices firmed up further amidst expectation of higher demand from India against the backdrop of limited supplies, industry sources said.
"Coking coal prices were bound to firm up as there was no scope for further decline. Miners would have decided to close down mining had prices fallen further and, in such a scenario, a little firmness in prices is not unexpected," an official from a leading coke maker in India said.
He, however, said feels any major upward trend in coking coal prices is unlikely in view of restricted demand from Chinese steel-makers.
In the steam coal segment, Australian prices softened further whereas South African and Indonesian varieties remained firm with an upward bias.
