Coking coal imports via Chennai up 28.07% in Feb m-o-m

March 14: Coking coal imports through the port of Chennai rose 28.07% to 73 tons in February 2014 against 57 tons registered in the previous month of the same year, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

In February, all the coking coal consignments arrived from the United Kingdom in a price range of Rs 30,129 - Rs 31,058 ($484-$493) per ton.

In January 2014, too, two small consignments arrived from the UK at Rs 30,631 (491-$492) per ton.

It may be noted that coal handling at Chennai Port has been suspended since October 2012 following a ban imposed by the Madras High Court on handling of dirty cargo of coal and iron ore at the port with effect from October 1, 2011. The court order came following the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL). However, old stocks are getting cleared.
