Construction of 10 new nuke projects to start in 12th Plan

August 21: The government plans to start constructions of 10 more nuclear power projects with a combined generation capacity of 17,400 MW within the current Five-Year Plan (12th plan; 2012-13 to 2016-17) in eight states, said Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for personnel, public grievances, pensions and Prime Minister’s Office.
Of the new nuclear power projects, six will have indigenous reactors with a combined generation capacity of 6,900 MW and the balance four will have reactors built through foreign collaboration, he said.
The domestic reactors will come up in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while the reactors made with foreign collaboration will be set up in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, Singh said.
India’s nuclear power capacity stands at 4,780 MW.
In addition, the first unit (1,000) of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) has been connected to the grid in 2013 and reached full power potential on June 7, 2014. The second unit of plant 2 at KKNPP (1,000 MW) is under commissioning while construction of the third and fourth units of the Kakrapar project in Gujarat, seventh and eighth units of the Rawatbhata project in Rajasthan and one unit of the Kalpakkam project in Tamil Nadu are under construction, the minister said.
