Court Victory for Coal Threatens US Promises on Climate Change
12 Feb 2016
An unprecedented ruling from the Supreme Court of the United States has suspended a federal regulation that sought to limit greenhouse gas emissions from coal-burning power plants, a move that the White House and environmentalists are warning could threaten promised action on climate change.
The ruling, the first ever to accept an industry request to stop the implementation of regulation before there is even a ruling on the regulation itself, threatens the Obama administration's commitment to phase out coal-fired power plants and invest in wind and solar power.
The suspended regulation was offered as part of a U.S. promise at last year's Paris climate talks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions a third by 2030.
The plan has been temporarily blocked while 29 states — along with dozens of energy companies — are challenging the regulation in an appeals court. The law firm leading the case said “a lot of people” are “celebrating” after the decision, with the unusual ruling suggesting that the plaintiffs will ultimately win if the case is ever appealed all the way up to the Supreme Court itself.
