Delhi HC to hear coal mining infra compensation cases on 21, 23 April
09 Apr 2015
The Delhi high court on Wednesday agreed to hear final arguments of several coal mining companies in relation to compensation for mining infrastructure on 21 April.
A bench of justices B.D. Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva set two dates to hear the submissions from the miners and the central government on the issue—21 April for the petitioner companies and 23 April for the government.
The main case is a plea by GVK Steel (Goindwal Sahib) Ltd and GVK Power (Goindwal Sahib) Ltd challenging certain provisions of the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Second Ordinance 2014, its rules and certain tender conditions.
There are several other pleas from other companies on similar grounds as well, including those of Jayaswal Neco Industries Ltd, Jindal Power Ltd, Tata Power Ltd. GVK companies had challenged the coal ordinance as the compensation to be provided under it was much lower than the costs incurred by the mining companies.
