September 20: Australian steam coal prices fell by about $0.70 per ton on September 19, but South African coal prices continued to remain firm, industry sources said.
Lack of Chinese enquiry was attributed to softness in Australian prices, they said.
The reason attributed for firmness in South African coal prices after $1.00 per ton gain recorded on September 18 was attributed to expectations of increased enquiries from India after recent firmness in the rupee against the US dollar.
The Indian rupee appreciated to Rs 62 against one US dollar on September 19 from a low of around $68 to one US dollar a few days back.
