Duke Energy Florida, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, saw a coal generation mix of 16.3% in June, down from 18% in May, the utility said in a state regulatory filing July 20.

 

The regulated utility told the Florida Public Service Commission it burned 294,422 st of coal in June, compared with 298,173 st in the previous month.

Compared with actual generation, the utility projected generation of 15.2% and 278,254 st for June.

 

Natural gas burn was at 14.6 Bcf in June, or 81.4% of generation, compared with 20.8 Bcf in May and 78.7% of generation.

 

In June, Florida city-gate gas prices averaged $3.448/MMBtu, down from $3.098/MMBtu in the previous month, according to S&P Global Platts.

 

Duke Energy Florida's Crystal River coal-fired plant generated 632,931 MWh in June, down from 640,772 MWh in May.

 

Average fuel cost for coal was at $2.84/MMBtu in June, down from $3.11/MMBtu in the previous month, while gas rose to $4.19/MMBtu in June, compared with $3.37/MMBtu.

 

Total coal burn in 2020 was at 1.56 million st, up from 1.46 million st expected for the year, but down from 1.98 million st burned in 2019. Generation mix for coal was 8.1% in 2020, down from 10.8% a year ago, while gas rose to 90% in 2020, from 88.5% in 2019.

 

Coal purchases in June totaled 245,639 st at an average delivered cost of $58.23/st, down from 246,397 st at $59.73/st in May.

 

At the end of June, Duke Energy Florida's coal inventory was at 387,546 st, or 39 days of supply, down from 462,981 st, or 48 days of supply, in the prior month.
