EC nod for Bhushan captive power unit expansion

February 26: The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC) has granted environmental clearances (EC) for expansion of imported coal-based captive power plant of Bhushan Steel Limited in the Dhenkanal district in Odisha.
With this, the total capacity of the captive power plant of Bhushan Steel will be 411 MW from the present 155 MW. The expanded capacity will be 256MW (1x175 MW+3x27 MW).
The clearance for the same was accorded on February 12.
According to the communique, the proposed thermal power plants will be installed within the existing 5.6 million tons per annum (mtpa) integrated steel plant premises and the fuel would be either 100% imported coal or 50% imported coal and 50% mix gas.
It said that imported coal (maximum 1.28 mtpa) will be sourced from Indonesia and the mixed gas will be sourced from the steel plant.
The MoEFCC mandated that sulphur and ash content of the imported coal must be at 0.3% and 6.0% respectively.
