Eastern Railway’s coal loading up sharply in Q1

July 11: Eastern Railways’ coal handling during the first quarter (April-June) of 2014-15 jumped 18.84% to 11.07 million tons (mt) from 9.315 mt during the corresponding quarter of 2013-14.
The ER said in a release that its total revenue loading increased to 16.172 mt during the quarter, surpassing the target of 15.660 mt, and up 15.14% in comparison to 14.046 mt loaded during the corresponding quarter of 2013-14.
This means that coal accounted for nearly 68.5% of the revenue loading for ER. In fact, coal contributed slightly more than 69.12% in the total freight loading of the railway.
The total revenue of the railway from freight loading also increased by 26.71% to Rs 1,233.03 crore in the first quarter of 2014-15 from Rs 973.10 crore in the corresponding quarter of 2013-14.
The share of earning from coal freight alone stood at Rs 852.37 crore till June, 2014 which is 41.43 % higher in respect of coal earning during corresponding period of last year.
“This quantum jump in both freight loading and earning in the current year is due to offering of coal rakes in the newly commissioned siding at Pakur and loading of coal rakes for long destinations,” the release said.
