Egbin thermal power plant to increase capacity

11 Nov 2015

Egbin Power Plc intends to double its electricity generation capacity at its thermal coal-fired power plant by 2019. It is currently the largest power generation plant in Nigeria and the company intends to add another 1350 MW to the existing 1320 MW to generate 2670 MW by 2019.

Egbin Power intends to establish Egbin as an industrial centre, providing companies with continuous power supply for factories.

According to the Nigerian Guardian, The Chairman of Egbin Electric Plc, Kola Adesina, who disclosed this during a media chart in Lagos yesterday said: “Our plan for Egbin is not just to maintain the 1320 MW capacity, we are planning to double the capacity. We also have a broad programme to make Egbin an industrial hub, whereby companies with future global supportive export capacity can come in and set up their factories knowing fully well that their business will enjoy efficient power supply. The industrial hub will take the form of an export-processing zone. We want to encourage industrial activities taking place in Egbin.”

Adesina also indicated that since the thermal plant came under new management, it has overcome obstacles, such as poor maintenance, and commenced a feasibility study, Environmental Impact Assessment and Front End Engineering Design, as well as currently processing an Engineering Procurement contract.
