Electrical gear imports corner 40% of India market

Imports of cheap materials from China and other countries have captured almost 40% of the Indian market for electrical equipment, according to a senior official of the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA).
“Imports of electrical equipment have assumed very threatening proportions and have now captured 38.26% market share of electrical equipment in India, whereas there is significant under-utilisation of installed domestic capacity, resulting in loss of employment,” the official said.
He further said that China's share in Indian imports of electrical equipment has dramatically increased in the last few years. In fact, China’s share has more than trebled over 15.26% in 2005-06.
“Data show that imports from China have grown at a CAGR of 24.67% in the last 7 years,” he added, noting that the government needs to focus on checking such cheap imports to make its ‘Make in India’ campaign a success.
