Essar Power looking to procure 4 mt imported coal in 2014

February 27: Essar Power Ltd is planning to procure around 4.0 million tons (mt) of imported coal in 2014, an industry source said.

The company had procured around 3.6-3.7 mt of imported coal in 2013 and it should be looking at crossing that level in 2014, the source added.

The company is looking to procure imported coal for its 1,200-MW Salaya 1 power plant located near Essar Oil's refinery complex at Vadinar in Jamnagar district of Gujarat.

The Salaya I power plant is an imported coal-fuelled thermal power unit with two 600-MW generation units. Salaya I Unit 1 (600 MW) started commercial operations from April 2012.

The company had initially planned to extract coal for the plant from Essar Energy's captive coal mine in Indonesia, but is currently buying from other sources till its mine comes to operation in Indonesia.
