Farmers fight moves for massive open cut coal mine

12 Nov 2013

A proposal to establish an open cut coal mine in Tasmania's Derwent Valley is facing local opposition.

Indicoal wants to develop the Langloh coal mine to remove 8 million tonnes of coal over eight years for the domestic and export markets.

Farmers Derwent Valley are trying to find out more the plan for farmland near Hamilton.

Tim Parsons operates an ecotourism venture opposite the site and is concerned about the effect the mine could have on visitor numbers.

He fears the proposal will leave visitors with a view over looking the open cut mine.

"This has just slammed us cold and now we are going to spend the next couple of weeks sort of looking through the documents, talking, lobbying to people that will listen, neighbouring property owners and perhaps even the property owners themselves involved in this have (who've) got no knowledge of it," he said.
