Fire area at Jharia reduced to 2 sq km: CIL

August 13: The fire affected area at the Jharia Coalfields under the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) has reduced significantly following the various measures undertaken by Coal India Ltd (CIL) as per the Master Plan prepared for this purpose.
“The fire area in Jharia Coalfields had reduced from 8.9 sq km (as assessed in Master Plan) to 2 sq km after undertaking various methods while implementing the Master Plan,” CIL said in its annual report for the year 2013-14.
The achievement is confirmed from the findings of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, Hyderabad, the miner said.
The project is considered part of the coal miner’s overall Green initiatives which also include reclamation and restoration of the mined out land, energy conservation initiatives and foray into renewable energy segments, it added.
