September 19: South African and Australian steam coal prices firmed up by about $1.00 per ton on September 18 on reports of increased enquiries from Chinese companies, industry sources said.
However, Indian companies still appear to be going slow, with freight rates slightly firming up in recent days, but they are likely to resume buying soon, they added.
Meanwhile, the coking coal market continued to firm up on resilient demand from China, an Indian coke maker told ICMW.
However, there appeared to be greater caution from end-users with the softening of downstream product prices such as billets and HRCs, the coke maker said.
Chinese demand appeared to be strong, with slight increments in deal values and indicative bids from the northeast region. Some early winter restocking was said to be on the way, which partly explained continued demand, he said.
Sources said coking coal prices firmed up further as negotiations on Q4 prices draw near that prompted miners to quote higher prices even as very few deals are actually materialising.
