October 23: Spot prices of steam coal, particularly the South African and Australian varieties, continued to fluctuate sharply on the higher side on October 22, industry sources said.
"The prices or offer prices continue to rise even as bids were not forthcoming, reflecting a cautious trend among buyers," they added.
South African coal prices (6,000 Kcal/kg NAR) have gain closed to $7.00 per ton since October 16 on limited availability of ready stocks even though there continued to be huge stockpile at RBCT, said one trader.
A section of Indian traders feel that the upward trend in prices was along expected lines as prices had fallen too much during the past few months while others feel that the sharp jump in prices has no basis.
Australian steam coal prices (6,300 Kcal GAR) also showed a firm trend, but this was limited to $2.00 per during the same period.
