January 14: Spot prices of South African steam coal of 6,000 Kcal/kg NAR firmed up sharply on January 13 in anticipation of higher enquiries from European countries in the aftermath of the Colombian government's decision to suspend loading of coal by Drummond, industry sources said.
Prices of SA coal surged to $84.20 per ton FOB on January 13 compared to a low of $83.25 per ton on January 10.
However, prices of Australian origin steam coal and higher grades of Indonesian coal softened by $0.50 per ton on reduced interest from China.
With this, prices of South African coal have risen by about $2.80 per ton since the suspension was announced on January 9 by the Colombian government.
