Further rise in coal stock levels seen at power plants

November 20: The coal stock levels at about 100 thermal power plants monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) improved further during the week ending November 18 compared to the previous week, according to CEA data.
The coal stocks at these plants rose to 25.497 million tons (mt) on November 18, 2015 from 24.838 mt as on November 12, 2015 as well as from 24.666 mt as on October 18, 2015.
The stocks on the above dates were, however, significantly higher compared to a low of 9.710 mt a year ago on November 18, 2014, according to CEA data.
With the rise in coal stock levels, the number of plants facing critical coal stocks position of less than seven days stood at five on November 18, while the figure was six on November 12, and nine on October 18, 2015. However, the figure was 55 on November 18, 2014.
Only two plants were identified as facing a super-critical coal stock level of less than four days as compared to three plants facing the same situation on November 12 and four plants on October 18. The total number of such plants stood at a high of 32 as on November 18, 2014.
Of the total coal stocks as on November 18, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.556 mt and domestic coal at 23.941 mt while on November 12, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.359 mt and domestic coal at 23.479 mt.
On the other hand, on October 18, 2015, imported coal inventory was at 1.628 mt and domestic coal at 23.038 mt while on November 18, 2014 the stocks of imported and domestic coals were at 1.126 mt and 8.584 mt, respectively.
