December 3: Spot prices of steam coal in major markets softened further in the absence of major buying and sufficient availability with miners and traders, market sources said.
Buyers are expecting further softness in South African and Australian steam coal prices after a brief rally in previous week that saw prices moving up, they said.
The price of standard South African coal (6000 Kcal NAR) fell by another $0.25 on December 2 on the back of a $0.85 decline registered on December 1 and a $0.70 fall was recorded on November 28 whereas off-spec (5500 Kcal NAR) material prices slipped by another $0.50 on December 2, down $2.60 in the last three sessions.
