GMB expects rise in coal import to India

July 28: Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), which controls all the government run ports in Gujarat, expects that coal imports to India will rise continuously in the immediate short term due to multiple factors.
“We do not see any change in scenario wherein coal imports are rising every year. We expect the imports to rise at least during the next 2-3 years,” a senior official of GMB told ICMW.
He pointed that it is not only GMB ports, but other ports in the country are also expected to witness a rise in handling of imported coal cargos.
“Till a few years back, only consumers in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan were using ports in Gujarat for transportation of imported coal, but in recent times, even the states like Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh are using the ports in the state for moving their imported coal cargo consignments,” the official said.
