Coal imports through Ganqimaodu border crossing in northern China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region from neighboring Mongolia reached 3.93 million tonnes in the year ending August 1, showed the latest local customs data.
The customs didn’t publish the July imports, which was calculated at around 390,000 tonnes, falling 51.25% on month but rising 41.44% on year.
The slowdown was mainly due to persisting weak demand and a supply glut in domestic market.
Besides, Mongolia started the year-long maintenance on a major coal transport road connecting Tavan Tolgoi mine and Ganqimaodu border crossing on March 20, affecting coal transportation from the coal-rich country.
Coal imports through Ganqimaodu border crossing have been falling since 2014, with April imports plunging 66.58% on year to 304,300 tonnes -- the sharpest monthly drop this year.
Presently, there are 15 importers at Ganqimaodu, 19 less than the previous year.
