Germany to Totally Exit Coal

06 Jun 2019

Proposal calls for the transition to occur by 2038.

A government-appointed coal commission in Germany has laid the groundwork for a plan to phase out the use of coal completely by 2038.

The move is coupled with an effort to eliminate nuclear power as well, with the goal of transitioning Germany to low-carbon forms energy production such as renewables and natural gas.

Dubbed Energiewende, the price tag for the plan is expected to be approximately US $46 billion, according to Reuters.

The government-appointed commission first proposed a pathway to reach a coal-free future in January of this year.
