Govt carrying out Rs 200-cr research projects on coal

December 11: The Government of India (GoI) has 34 on-going research projects on the coal sector with a total outlay of more than Rs 200 crore at various academic and research institutions through its Coal Science & Technology (S&T) scheme and Coal India Limited (CIL).
Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy, stated that the research works are related to improvement in productivity and safety in coal mines, coal beneficiation and utilisation, protection of environment and ecology and other related activities. Many of these projects have yielded considerable benefits, resulting in operational improvement, safer working conditions, better resource recovery and protection of the achievement.
To carry out the research, different government, academic or research institutions are involved in the research work in the coal sector. In includes the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur; Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad; the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; Institute of Mineral and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar; Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, to name a few.
The expenditure on R&D activities for the last three years and the current year by CIL and through S&T grant of the Ministry of Coal are as follows:
