Govt okay to electricity amendment Act, says Goyal

May 12: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy submitted its report on May 7 on Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2014, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (I/C) for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on May 11.

“The Union Cabinet has approved the proposals for amendment in the Electricity Act, 2003, on December 10, 2014 and this was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy subsequently,” the minister said.

The Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2014 allows multiple supply licensees in order to bring in competition and efficiency in the distribution sector by giving choice to the consumers, the minister added.
