Green nod for Jhabua Power phase II expansion

09 Sep 2014

September 9: Jhabua Power Limited has obtained environmental clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) for phase II expansion.

The company plans to build a 660-MW imported coal-based thermal power plant (phase II) in Madhya Pradesh.

The ministry awarded the EC for the expansions vide a letter issued to the management on August 21, 2014.

The MoEF communique, however, made it clear that the present proposal is only for an interim period until domestic coal is made available for the proposed expansion.

Environmental clearance for the 1x600 MW (phase-I) domestic coal-based TPP was accorded on February 17, 2014 and 90% construction for phase-I is completed.

The imported (Indonesian) coal requirement will be 2.85 million tons per annum (mtpa) and the company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Coal
Trade Services International Pte Ltd, Singapore for supply of imported coal.

The government mandated ash and sulphur contents in imported coal to be at 8% and 0.5% respectively and gross calorific value of the coal to be 4,000 kcal/kg.

The land required for expansion of the project is 385.80 acres and the total capital cost of the project would be Rs 3,500 crore.

Forest clearance for 9.58 acres of forest land for expansion of the project has been obtained in 2012.
