September 3: Welspun Energy UP Private Limited has obtained the environmental clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment, Forests (MoEF) to set up its 2x660 MW super critical coal-based thermal power plant at Dadri Khurd in Uttar Pradesh.
The ministry awarded the EC for the expansions vide a letter issued to the management on August 21, 2014.
As per the communique, the project was earlier proposed to be set up based on domestic coal but due to non-availability of domestic coal, it has been decided to go ahead with imported coal from Indonesia for an interim period until domestic coal is available.
The MoEF mandates that ash and sulphur content of the imported coal should be at 14% and 0.34% respectively. The gross calorific value of the coal will be 4,400 kcal/kg.
The communique further added that a coal supply agreement had been signed with Sirdi Sai Goodearth International Pte Ltd. Ash generated through power generation will be supplied for manufacturing cement and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with ABG Cement Ltd in this regard.
The land required for the project is 875 acres and the total capital cost of the project would be Rs 7,500 crore.
