11 Jun 2014
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) reiterated its ruling to ban rat-hole coal mining in Meghalaya, but provided partial relief to coal mine owners by allowing them to transport the coal already extracted and lying in the different mines of the state in the wake of the ban.
The decision to continue the ban on unscientific coal mining was taken during a hearing of the NGT's special circuit bench for the eastern zone in the Meghalaya high court here on Monday. The bench was chaired by Justice Swatanter Kumar and included expert Ranjan Chaterjee.
Till the next hearing on August 1, both the state government and the coal miners have been give an opportunity to work on a "comprehensive mechanism" to stop illegal mining activities.
