The steady decline in the price of prime Australian coking coal landed in China which began last June has ended, with Mysteel’s price for Australia-origin coking coal with 10.5% ash and 0.6% sulphur reaching $165/tonne CFR China as of October 16, higher by a marked $12/tonne from September 30. 

Market sources Wednesday cited the growth in coal imports after China’s National Day break over October 1-7 as the key driver supporting the price. “We have noted the rise in bid prices for Australian coal recently, particularly for those cargoes expected to arrive close to the end of the year,” a Shanghai-based source remarked.
