Guangdong August coal imports up 44.8% y-o-y

Southern China’s economic hub Guangdong province imported 3.88 million tonnes of coal in August this year, rising 44.77% on year but down 17.43% from July, according to the latest customs data.
Total value of the August imports was $189.6 million, which translates to an average price of $48.93/t, decreasing $4.91/t on month and down $26.84/t on year.
Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation, stood at 3.62 million tonnes in August, falling 11.47% month on month and down 10.63% on year.
Of this, lignite imports accounted for around 52.7% or 1.91 million tonnes, down 23.98% from July but up 10.6% year on year.
The province imported 0.21 million tonnes of coking coal in August, slumping 47.85% on month and down 94.71% on year.
Over January-August, the province imported a total 30.52 million tonnes of coal, up 26.88% year on year, data showed.
Total thermal coal imports during the same period reached 27.27 million tonnes, down 26.28% on year, with lignite imports at 14.92 million tonnes, down 16.83%; while coking coal imports was 2.77 million tonnes, plunging 93.34%.
