North China’s Hebei province produced 40.33 million tonnes of raw coal in the first half of the year, down 17.48% year on year, showed the latest data from the provincial coal industry association.
The washed coal output was 18.96 million tonnes, down 9.11% on year, said the association.
Over January-June, Hebei sold 34.72 million tonnes of commercial coal, down 5.5% from a year ago.
Rail coal transport in the province totaled 14.47 million tonnes during the same period, down 15.6% on year, data showed.
By end-June, coal mines across Hebei held a total 2.41 million tonnes at stocks, down 18.6% from the end of last year and down 25.9% from end-May, which could last for 10.82 days of consumption.
Between January and June, sales price of commercial coal averaged 338.73 yuan/t in Hebei, down 19.2% from the year prior, with that of washed coking coal and thermal coal falling 20.97% and 19.05% on year, respectively.
Over January-June, Hebei’s coal sector realized revenue of 182.35 billion yuan ($29.8 billion), up 0.98% on year, with total loss at 1.964 billion yuan, compared with a loss of 1.267 billion yuan from the same period last year.
The association predicted no clear rebound about the future coal sector; coal producers may continue to suffer from poor sales and losses amid the oversupplied market in the remaining months of the year.
