ICVL floats EoI to generate power from rejects in Mozambique

April 21: In a bid to better utilise its huge reserves of coal rejects in Mozambique coal block, India Coal Ventures Ltd (ICVL) has floated a global expression of interest (EoI) to generate power from the low heat coal, N C Jha, MD and CEO, ICVL, said.
“There is at present a huge reserve of rejects. We have recently floated a global expression of interest to generate power from this low heat coal. People have shown interest,” Jha told ICMW.
Although the mining block has three types of coals, namely coking coal, thermal coal and coal of low heat, Jha said that the EoI was floated only for thermal coal.
“Currently, thermal coal is not exportable because of the market conditions. So we want people to take that coal from our pit head or set up a power plant there itself or a plant for conversion of thermal coal to chemicals like ammonium nitrate, which is used for fertilizer,” he said.
Jha added that ICVL has “received four offers, but one of the participants has backed out because it needs a slightly higher quantity, which we do not produce.”
The other three bidders were from Australia, Europe and India (Tata Power).
