India achieves 94.6% village electrification till August

October 4: India has achieved electrification of 94.6% of its villages till August 31, 2013, according to data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Of the total number of 593,732 villages across the country, 561,374 have already been electrified, leaving 32,358 villages which are yet to have access to power, the data showed.

Altogether, 14 states and union territories (UT) have achieved 100% rural electrification so far. These are Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

Among the worst performers are Andaman & Nicobar Island (67.7%), Nagaland (70.1%) and Arunachal Pradesh (75.5%).
