India adds 2,280 MW capacity in December

Altogether, 2,280 megawatt (MW) of power generation capacity was added in India in December 2015, according to a report released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Incidentally, there was no capacity addition in November 2015.

 

The country had added 668.67 MW of generation capacity in December 2014, the data revealed.

 

India’s total power generation capacity addition during the first nine months (April-December) of 2015-16 stood higher by 5.80% as compared to the corresponding period in 2014-15.

 

The total power generation capacity addition during the first nine months of 2015-16 stood at 11,226 MW, up from 10,610.41 MW added during the same period of 2014-15, the data revealed.

 

Of the total capacity addition during the first nine months of 2015-16, 9,870 MW was in the thermal sector, down 4% from 10,274.40 MW added in the same period of 2014-15. The addition in hydro was, however, up a whopping 304% at 1,356 MW from only 336.01 MW added in the same period last year. There was no addition in the nuclear sector either in 2014-15 or in 2015-16.

 

The following units were commissioned in December 2015:

 

Thermal

1) Kakatiya St 2 U-1 (600 MW) was commissioned on December 31, 2015

2) Sagardihi Extn U-3 (500 MW) was commissioned on December 12, 2015

3) Prayagraj (Bara) U-1 (660 MW) was commissioned on December 25, 2015

4) Vizag U-1 (520 MW) was commissioned on December 27, 2015

 

According to the CEA, India’s total installed power generation capacity stood at 284,303.39 MW at the end of December 2015.

 

Of the total installed capacity in the country, thermal power generation capacity stood at 198,484.44 MW (173,017.88 MW coal-fired, 24,473.03-MW gas-fired and 993.53 MW diesel-fired), nuclear power generation capacity stood at 5,780 MW, hydro generation at 42,623.42 MW and renewables at 37,415.53 MW.
