31 Mar 2016
Around 660 MW of power generation capacity was added in India in February 2016, according to a report released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Incidentally, 2,295.6 MW of power generation capacity was added in January 2016.
The country had added 2,305 MW of generation capacity in February 2015, the data revealed.
India’s total power generation capacity addition during the first 11 months (April- February) of 2015-16 stood lower by 11% as compared to the corresponding period in 2014-15.
The total power generation capacity addition during the first 11 months of 2015-16 stood at 14,181 MW, down from 15,935.41 MW added during the same period of 2014-15, the data revealed.
Of the total capacity addition during the first 11 months of 2015-16, 12,745 MW was in the thermal sector, down 13% from 14,599.4 MW added in the same period of 2014-15.
The addition in hydro was, however, up a whopping 327% at 1,436 MW from only 336.01 MW added in the same period last year. There was no addition in the nuclear sector in 2015-16 though there was addition of 1,000 MW in the same period of 2014-15.
The following units were commissioned in February 2016:
Thermal
1. Goindwal Sahib TPP U-1 (270 MW) was commissioned on February 14, 2016
2. Ind Barath Energy. TPP U-I (350MW) was commissioned on February 25, 2016
Hydro
Teesta Low dam Stage-IV U-1 (40 MW) was commissioned on February 14, 2016
According to the CEA, India’s total installed power generation capacity stood at 288,664.97 MW at the end of February 2016.
Of the total installed capacity in the country, thermal power generation capacity stood at 201360.04 MW (1,758,577.88 MW coal-fired, 24,508.63-MW gas-fired and 993.53 MW diesel-fired), nuclear power generation capacity stood at 5,780 MW, hydro generation at 42,703.42 MW and renewables at 38,821.51 MW.
