India adds 8,000 MW renewable capacity in 2 years

December 12: India has added over 8,000 MW of renewable energy capacity during 2011-12 and 2012-13 and aims to install another 4,325 MW capacity in the current fiscal, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, said on December 12.

While 4,942 MW of renewable energy-based power projects were commissioned in 2011-12, around 3,163 MW of capacity came up in 2012-13, the minister said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

More than half of the total capacity addition, or about 4,895 MW, came up in the wind power sector, while 1,659 MW was installed in the solar sector.

During 2013-14, against a targeted 4,325 MW, around 1,468 MW grid-connected renewable power projects were commissioned as of October 31, 2013, the minister informed.

He further said that, so far, about 2,101 MW of grid-connected solar power plants and 19,881 MW of wind power plants have been installed in the country.
