09 May 2016
India has as many as 70 private ports, which are operational and nearly 50% of them are in Maharashtra and Gujarat, according to data from the Ministry of Shipping.
These private ports are governed under the jurisdiction of the state government and their entry has helped the major ports owned by the government to become more competitive and efficient, an official from the ministry said.
Due to various initiatives taken in major ports, the operating income has shown an increase of 8% in 2015-16 as compared to 2014-15, the official added.
