India may add 90 GW of thermal capacity by 2017-18

July 15: A total of around 90.145 GW of thermal power generation capacity is likely to be added in India between July 2014 and March 2018, a power ministry official said.

The official said a total of 91 thermal projects are at present under construction, of which the status of six projects with 17 units and total generation capacity of 7,260 MW is uncertain and these are likely to come up only in the 13th Plan Period (2017-18 to 2022-23).

The plants that are likely to come up in the 13th Plan include four units with total generation capacity of 2,640 MW, in Bihar, two units of one project in Chhattisgarh and 11 units of four projects in Maharashtra.

Of the total 91 projects, 23, with a combined generation capacity of 23,705.30 MW, are scheduled to come up under the central sector, 20 projects with a total capacity of 16,810 MW will be under the state sector and 48 projects with total generation capacity of 49,570 MW will be under the private sector.
